In this one day tour we will cover the main attraction in Galle ; the Galle fort and a few other attractions around. First we visit Martin Wickramasingha folk museum in Koggala. Mr. Wickramasinggha was the most prolific writer in the country during the last century. This is his ancestral home transformed into a museum. This unique museum not only offers a glimpse into the island’s distinctive folk culture but also gives you an insight about this great author. Numerous artefacts, intricate pottery, costumes used in folk dances, agricultural tools, traditional carts and colourful puppets and masks shed light on the traditional life normal villagers lived a century ago and their culture.Set amidst picturesque greenery, this carefully preserved ancestral home is a popular attraction to visit when staying in and around Galle. Next we will visit Japanese peace pagoda on top of Rumassala hill which brings you breathtaking views of Galle harbour , Dutch Fort and the Indian ocean from atop. Fa Hien Cave Tour from Galle 105 $
Fa-Hien cave is the largest cave on the island, and one of the largest natural rock formations in all of Asia. The cave was also the site of a remarkable archaeological discovery that dug up human skulls dating back about 37,000 years—the remains of one of the region’s oldest prehistoric human settlements Surrounded by tropical greens, the mammoth cave measures 200 feet long, with an entrance 175 feet high and 160 feet wide, and sits 400 feet above sea level. There are areas inside the cave which are over 400 feet high Beyond the cave’s natural beauty, the archaeological finds within it make it a remarkable piece of history. In addition to the human skulls the Sri Lankan Archaeological Departments found, they also discovered weapons from the same era. These weapons, made from animal bones and stones, were used to kill deer, monkeys, porcupines, and other animals. The excavation pit is open to visitors, and if you’re curious, you can walk down the stairs and into the pit and take a look at the digs with your own eyes Getting to the cave involves rather a long walk and semi-strenuous climb over stone steps , but compared to the other historic sites in Sri Lanka, the climb and walk, in this case, is minimal The way to this cave which is about 90 kms from Galle lies through rice fields and rural villages revealing most beautiful Sri Lankan countryside. This is a fantastic opportunity to see Sri Lankan villages and the rural life in its original form which the tourists traveling to popular destinations on pre planned itineraries do normally miss to see. you can also take the opportunity to get off your vehicle and hang around a bit in the surroundings of a village getting to know the people and rural life.
